tur dal  1 cup wet for 1 hour beforehand
Rice 11/2 cups
prawns deveined
1 cup/ fish preferably pomfret, rawas, surmai or mackerel
2 big tomatoes
green coriander leaves
curry leaves
finely chopped spring onions optional
5 big onions finely chopped.
1 tsp red chili powder
½ tsp haldi powder
1 tsp sambhar powder
1 tsp jeera
1 tsp green chili
garlic and ginger paste
salt to taste for marinating prawns or fish.

cook dal in the pressure cooker with water, a pinch of haldi powder and salt to taste. Cook rice with salt to taste. For patia, fry finely chopped onions till dark brown then put curry leaves, chopped tomatoes, 1 tsp green chili, garlic and ginger paste, 1 tsp sambhar powder, 1 tsp red chili powder, ½  tsp haldi powder and salt to taste fry for sometime on low flame then add the prawns and let it simme on low flame for sometime then add spring onion finely chopped <optional>. Then last add 1 cup water and cook till prawns are tender add finely chopped coriander leaves. This same patia can be made in sweet and sour taste too by adding 1 tsp sugarcane vinegar and  1 tbsp jaggery after prawns are cooked well. Important: while cooking fish patia add fish after adding water and do not stir after wards as it will break. let it cook for 5 to 7 minutes covered.
